Software requirements (not included!):
Excel 2007* or newer for Windows. Tested on XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 (see note below about Windows 7 and 8) and Windows 10.

Works on Excel 365 for Windows.

WILL NOT work on Excel 2003 and older, Open Office or Excel for Macintosh.

*Excel 2007 users - please email me AFTER your purchase for an additional file you will need.

International users may have to alter their Regional settings due to Betfair spelling out the dates in English text format within the BettingPandL file even for non English-speaking countries. In Windows 10 click on the Windows button and type 'Currency' and click on 'Change the way currency is displayed'. In Windows 7 & 8 go to Windows start button > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Formats (tab) - Current format and set to "English - United Kingdom".  See this post Using your Language and Currency format

Windows 7 & 8: There is a security scan in Windows 7 & 8 which can prevent 3rd party Excel files such as the Betfair P&L file from being opened.  When trying to open the Betfair P&L file in excel you will get the error message,"Run-time error '1004': Method 'Open' of object 'Workbooks' failed".  Please download a Betfair P&L file and make sure you can open it before purchasing the 'Results Summary' spreadsheet. If you are using Windows 7 / 8 you can open the Betfair P&L using Open Office (free software) - then by saving it without any changes it can be opened by Excel under Windows 7 /8.  Equally, if you have access to another PC with XP or Vista you can re-save the file before transferring it to your Windows 7 / 8 PC.  This is a known issue which Microsoft have no plans to rectify http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/is/exceldev/thread/69434b37-a3ed-4970-a929-89e03ee01aaf

Windows 10: The issue described above with Windows 7 & 8 does not occur with Windows 10.  You can download the BettingPandL file from Betfair and directly open it in Excel. Happy days!

Once downloaded, no refunds will be given under any circumstances, please make sure you have the right Excel software and can open the BettingPandL file downloaded from Betfair.

  1. Hi
I would like to ask if one may see his/her traded volume and the net revenue of the trades plus the betfair and betdaq commission paid during time?
The last one. Is it possible to see the prices that are matched in each trade and hence how many ticks one loose or win per trade?
    thnaks

  2. Hi Anon,

    1. Traded volume can only be ascertained from the Betting History download, not the P&L download that is used for this spreadsheet. The P&L download only shows how much you have won/lost for each market, not each individual trade.

Net revenue of trades again cannot be calculated from the P&L download. You can however see your profitability at a market level (Total profits v Total losses) this is shown in various places throughout the spreadsheet and summarised by month, sport, racecourse, etc.

    2. It would be simple to work out your approximate commission paid - look at the top screen ("summary") for example - just multiply the relevant figure in the "Total Profits" column by your commission rate (5% less discount).

As your discount rate could vary daily, I'd need to add a new column for you to see a more accurate calculation of your commission. However, this would rely on you entering your discount rate before each P&L import. Is this what you'd want?

    3. Again, price matched is only shown in the Betting History download, not P&L download. Even then, it is not possible to be 100% sure which back bet relates to which lay bet unles you only ever have 1 in the market at any one time and always close it before entering another order into the market. This is a major drawback for many traders, so I'm not sure how much use it would be to release this kind of functionality. I've tried doing this before by matching the back bets to the lay bets etc etc but it's not straightforward especially as you may / may not green up each trade as you go along and sometimes you get partially matched, so the trades don't obviously match up!

  3. Hi MG,

Great looking spreadsheet, i too am having trouble transfering results from Betfair p/l through windows 7.

The link you provided isnt working, any ideas on what to do to get Excel to read the files ?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hi Anon, glad you like the spreadsheet! The link was just to show that this is a known issue that Microsoft are aware of, I'll try and find another one.

In terms of a solution for Windows 7 users - Betfair aren't even acknowledging this issue when I contacted them! However, there is a free workaround which I have had confirmation that it works from a previous purchaser of the Results Summary spreadsheet.

The solution is to install "Open Office" software which is an open source alternative to MS Office and it also opens and saves Excel files(plus Word etc). After downloading your Betfair P&L file, you then open it in Open Office, save it, then you will be able to open it in MS Excel (and therefore you can import it to my spreadsheet too :)

You can download Open Office for free here:
    http://www.openoffice.org/

I recommend it as I used it for years before having to buy MS Office for use with Gruss et al.

I suggest you get onto Betfair support and ask them to sort their P&L file out so it works for Windows 7 users!

Let me know how you get on. Cheers, MG

  6. hi,
I purchased your spreadsheet yesterday and have to say that it is look GREAT. It has so many functions and I am able to analyze my trading in many different ways.
And for only Ł1,99 it is definetely worth to buy it!
I know an Excel a bit but your spreadsheet make me amazed.
Thanks for your work on it. It is really helpful tool. WELL DONE!!!

  7. Recently purchased the spreadsheet and am very pleased with it...very easy to use and i'm sure most punters would benefit from analysing their P&L figures from time to time...it certainly clarified some things for me....for the money, it's a no-brainer.

    Cheers, Ian

  8. Hi MG
loving the spreadsheet, help me a lot,so far.
I have noticed on the Betfair P&L, you can drill down to get the entry and exit points of each trade. Is it possible to do the same in your spreadsheet? I have looked, but cannot find it. Am I missing something?
Thanks again and keep up the good work guys!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi Anon. no, you're not missing something, but the idea of this spreadsheet is to give useful summary totals (hence the name!). It uses the Betfair P&L file which only has total P&L per market, not each individual bet.

If there's demand for it I may make a different spreadsheet product to look at individual bets (using the Betfair "bet history" file). Won't be anytime soon though!

  10. I just purchased your spreadsheet . Congrats!!!! The only thing i want to ask you is there any way to download one excel file from betafair to import it at once on spreadsheet or i must to download and import one file at a time for any sport indivedualy?

    thx

  11. I have a problem . How can i change the pounds symbol with the euro. I try the region and language format for UK and chnge currency to euro. For a short time it work but when i opened again the document it show only pounds again

  12. Thanks. Betfair only allow customers to download P&L data for one sport at a time. Shame really as the spreadsheet would handle them all in one go!

  13. Please follow the guide in this post: Using your Language and Currency format in Results Summary spreadsheet

It's important to follow the steps precisely and make sure that there are no instances of Excel running when you start (you can check this in the task manager or do it when you've just switched on your computer).

  14. Hi Mind Games, Betdaq format their dates as either 27/7/2012 or 27-7-2012 on the same downloaded file. Your spreadsheet only seems to import one format,is there a work around to read both?

    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi, I don't see this on my own downloads from Betdaq. On the Market P&L spreadsheet the date is in Excel date format (unlike Betfair who use text format) so Results Summary can read it correctly regardless anyhow. On mine this appears in the dd/mm/yyyy format.

Can you email me a small sample of a Betdaq Market P&L file that has this different date format? Are you outside of the UK? If you are using a different date setting maybe that is the reason.

  16. Hi,

    Looks great!

Is it still not compatible with Excel for Macintosh? Like Excell 2011?

    Kind regards

    1. Hi Teis,

I haven't got Excel 2011 for Mac but I really doubt it will work with the spreadsheet. The 2010 version seemed a long way off being compatible.

I think the only likely way is if you have a windows emulator like Parallels running windows Excel.

  20. Hi,

Is there a way to use the spreadsheet to workout my overall Strike rate as well as per sport and event?

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Jason, Yes of course! Please refer to the post here:
More on the Results Summary spreadsheet
This shows for any column (or part of a column) how to get average and also total, minimum, maximum.

I suggest you start on the "Summary" tab and on the daily totals table. Then select all of the values in the "SR" column and then read-off the average at the bottom of the screen. If you select the whole column (move the cursor until it is a downwards pointing arrow as in the screenshot) then the value given will be a decimal number e.g. 0.57 which means 57%. 0.75 would be 75% and so on.
If you select a range of dates rather than the whole column then the result is given to you as a percentage.
Hope this helps, please let me know!

  21. Hello
No problems using the spreadsheet until I imported the last week or so of results and have a null value somewhere, that appears as N/A in my results. I can't see any anomalies in my Betfair download; any suggestions what to look out for or perhaps how to reformat it before importing?
    Thanks
    Alistair

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Alistair,
That's strange. I suggest you use the "export all records in Betfair format" button (Summary tab, on the right hand side of the screen). Look at the data that is exported (export file will be in the same folder as your Results Summary spreadsheet), the error will probably be evident there. It is most likely to do with dates - have the language / date settings changed on your PC?
If it a problem with the data you can go back to your last backup and import records again with the item corrected, or start a fresh version of results Summary and import all of your data in one go with the data error corrected first.
Let me know how you get on.

  23. All sorted thanks. It seemed to be importing the column titles, possibly as row 2 was blank.

  25. Thanks Mind Games, definitely the best couple of quid I've spent. Shockingly revelatory! It shows clearly in black and red exactly the bets I need to avoid and those that are profitable.
If I'd have stuck to one category of race my life would be very different today financially; hopefully it will be in future! I'll keep you posted. By the way, your advanced data analysis shows anyone how to sort their data exactly how they need it. Excellent spreadsheet. I'd never have been able to do it myself.
    Thanks again

  26. Folks,

This is an excellent spreadsheet for analysing your Betfair P&L. Easy to use, and backed up with clear and concise videos.

After downloading, I updated my historic data from Betfair, and in no time at all was analysing the trends. Really useful.

I subsequently emailed MG with a query relating to some further analysis I was trying to perform, and he responded in minutes with some excellent suggestions - fantastic support.

    Highly recommended !

    Cheers

    1. Hi, This is a new feature on v3 of the spreadsheet. I just had a similar question via email - if this was you then I can see you are already on v3. I think it may be that you are using a smaller screen and need to scroll across to the right (using scroll bar at bottom right of spreadsheet) on the 'Horse Racing' tab. Please let me know if this solves your question. Thanks.
